Tools and Recovery Gear - what to pack for camping

The list of recovery gear you could pack for a remote camping experience is endless - but there are a few essentials, and mostly they can be packed into a relatively compact tool kit.  This stuff is heavy and takes up space, but it can and will get you out of trouble.  If traveling with others, you can share the load.  We had a few extra bits and pieces shared between our "touring party of five" across the Simpson Desert, including cordless angle grinders etc, and only one vehicle in the group had a winch (which was sufficient - and didn't get used).

All up, WITHOUT a winch, you are going to be looking at somewhere around 30-40kg of tools.  With a winch would get you up closer to 90-100kg.

The below includes everything we packed for our trip through the Top End, Red Centre and Simpson Desert.
